How to Not be Afraid of the “What Ifs”

How to not be afraid ofDo you live life being afraid of the “what ifs?”

I know I do! My assumptions of what might happen cause me to decline event invites, avoid new experiences and to not be adventurous in any way!

This is definitely NOT how God intended us to live! The enemy will try his absolute best to steal our joy and strike fear into our hearts. The Bible says, “The thief (the enemy) comes to kill and destroy but I have come so that you may have life and live it abundantly.” John 10:10

God wants us to live life to the fullest and to not only enjoy ourselves, but to live a life worthy of the calling He has put on our lives! ( Colossians 1:10)

So many times in life we make excuses for the things that God is calling us to do for no better reason but that we are afraid of what might happen. The reality is we do not really know what will happen, only God does.

Here are 3 truths to empower you to go live the life that God has given you:

  1. God knows us better than we know ourselves

girl10You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down. ; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, you Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. Psalm 139:1-6

This verse has always been one of my favorites because it talks about how God knows us, our inner most thoughts and our true selves.

Have you ever gone through a hard time, feel like you have lost your way or just need advice? Of course, we all have! We usually go to a friend or family member that has known us for awhile and gets us. They know our likes and dislikes, passions, dreams, etc. God knows all these things about you too! The coolest part is, He’s the one that gave us these passions! God encourages us to live those passions out, yet we cannot do that if we are holding ourselves back.

2. We do not have to be anxiousdepressedgirl

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition,  make your requests known to God. Philippians 4:6

It’s totally natural to get excited about something and to imagine the possibilities of what could happen! However, it doesn’t do anyone any good to expect bad things to happen!

Don’t get me wrong, this is not an easy task by any means! I know how hard it is to give your anxious thoughts up to the Lord.

In my own personal life, I recently struggled with being anxious about anything that I did not know. For example, I would not want to drive anywhere that I hadn’t been before or be too far away from my home because I had convinced myself I wasn’t “safe” otherwise. That’s a lie that I was believing and it simply is not true. The truth is, I am safe because God is always with me and the Holy Spirit lives inside of me. We are strong because He resides within us.

In Philippians 4:13 it states, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This verse has really helped me take a moment, stop and breathe. Believe in His promises and what He has for me and speak these truths over myself. Now whenever I feel anxiety bubbling up within me, I have allowed God’s truths about me to replace the lies that the enemy is telling me to cause me to be fearful.

I love the song, from Laura Hackett that goes, “When I’m afraid I will trust in you, when I’m overcome I will cling on to the rock, that is higher.” Look it up here to listen to it if you have the time. The lyrics are powerful! It’s a great song to put on when you are feeling like you need a pick me up. These lyrics tie into the verse that states:

The Lord is my rock and my salvation, who shall I fear? Psalm 27:1

It also says in the Word that the enemy is under our feet. (Romans 16:20)

Remember, that’s where he belongs!

3. God wants to go on adventures with us1

You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever. Psalm 16:11

Do you know that God wants us to go on adventures with Him? This is something He delights in! He wants to speak to us, show us things and allow us to experience His presence. We can only do this by seeking His face every day and not letting fear control our lives! It’s about replacing worry with trust.

I hope that you continue to speak truths over yourself and that you are inspired to go out and live a life full of adventure and fun!

How do you kick fear to the curb in your everyday life? I would love to hear your thoughts!
