3 Heartfelt Prayers for the Difficult Moments

3heartfeltprayersToday, I got some bad news. It made my heart sink and I found myself struggling to pray.

It is not that my faith wasn’t challenged but I didn’t have words to express the hurt and utter disappointment I was feeling. People I love are hurting, children are hurting when they shouldn’t have to be, and I have no way to take that pain away from them myself.

However, I do have the Spirit of God in me and I know that if I pray God’s will, that Jesus and the Holy Spirit will work through me to do what pleases God the Father (Romans 8:11, Matthew 6:9-10, John 14:12-14).

I am by no means powerless, but where do I start? What words do I say? I’m too upset to form the right words. If that is where you are at, here are 3 heartfelt prayers that you can speak during the difficult moments.

Some years ago, I got a phone call from a frantic loved one who had literally just been physically attacked. This person called 911 and then me. As I rushed out the door, my mind drew a blank on what to pray. Praying scripture is one of the most powerful things you can do as a Christian, so I began reciting Matthew 6:9-10.

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.”

Not only did it help to calm me, but it helped me shift my perspective from a scared “Oh my God!” to a powerful and authoritative “Oh my God!”

2. Pray that the hurt meets the Healer.

falling leavesSometimes people make bad choices. Sometimes people refuse to change. Sometimes praying can’t undo what has been done. For those affected by the poor choices of others, pray that the hurt meets the Healer. Pray for the victims of a situation to run to God so that He could make it right within their heart’s.

“God, I pray in Jesus name, right now, that everyone affected by this event would turn from the hurt inside and run to You, run to the Healer. I pray that peace would reign in their hearts, that they would seek Your face, Your embrace, and choose forgiveness. I pray that they will put all anger, bitterness, and grief on the cross, leave it there, and cling to Jesus instead. Amen.”

Don’t forget to pray for the perpetrator as well; God calls us to pray for our enemies. Usually, how much destruction they cause is in proportion to the pain they feel inside.

3. Pray for wisdom.

ponderingDepending on the situation, you (and others) may be facing some tough choices. You have bad options, good options, and then the BEST option. Pray for wisdom to know which is the best option for representing God and that others would see the best option as well.

“Holy Spirit, you guide me into all truth. You are the Spirit of wisdom. I pray that the best choice would be revealed to me, right now, in Jesus name. I command all confusion and spiritual blinders from the enemy to leave me and everyone else in this situation. I command clarity and Godly wisdom to fill our minds and hearts, and I pray for the strength to make the best choice and the perseverance to see it through. In Jesus name, amen.”

If you find yourself in need of one of these prayers, I’m sorry. Jesus is with you. He feels what you feel. He has what you need to move past what is before you and walk with a full heart again. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

Much peace and love to you.
